DePuy Hip Implants - United States
According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), about 33 million Americans are affected by osteoarthritis, a degenerative joint disease, and more than 193,000 total hip replacements (THR) are performed each year in the U.S., mostly due to some form of degenerative arthritis.
On August 18, 2009, DePuy Orthopaedics, Inc. announced that the Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation Devices Advisory Committee of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommended FDA approval of the Pinnacle® Complete Acetabular Hip System, the first ceramic-on-metal hip bearing to be considered for approval in the U.S.
The FDA panel's recommendation was based in part on the results from a two-year controlled, randomized, blinded, prospective, multicenter, non-inferiority clinical study and laboratory test that compared the safety and effectiveness of the Pinnacle Complete System to a commonly used DePuy metal-on-metal implant.

The CoMplete Acetabular Hip System is a cementless ceramic-on-metal (CoM) system comprised of the ceramic Biolox® Delta femoral head component and the metal Pinnacle® Ultamet® metal insert. The Biolox® Delta ceramic femoral head is manufactured from zirconia-toughened, platelet-reinforced alumina ceramic and is available in 28mm and 36mm outer diameters in multiple neck lengths. The Pinnacle® Ultamet® acetabular insert is manufactured from a cobalt-chromium-molybdenum (CoCrMo) alloy and is available with 28mm and 36mm inner diameters. These devices are currently commercially available, having been cleared through the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommended FDA approval of the Pinnacle® Complete Acetabular Hip System. However, the combination of ceramic-on-metal was not approved in the United States (US) until 2009.
Components that are compatible with the DePuy CoMplete Acetabular Hip System include a titanium alloy (Ti6Al4V) acetabular outer shell/cup available in multiple sizes and various fixation configurations, and either a titanium tapered femoral stem or a titanium modular femoral stem with titanium femoral sleeve. All of these components are currently commercially available in multiple sizes and various fixation configurations for compatibility with the Biolox® Delta femoral head and Pinnacle® Ultamet® metal insert which comprise the CoMpleteTM Acetabular Hip System.
The metal Pinnacle® Ultamet® acetabular insert and the ceramic Biolox® Delta femoral head serve as the bearing surfaces in patients receiving total hip arthroplasty (THA) surgery. The femoral stem (tapered hip or modular hip and sleeve) serves to provide a stable connection between the femoral head and the patient's femur, while the acetabular outer shell serves to provide a stable connection between the acetabular insert and the patient's acetabulum.
TX Pinnacle Hip Recall
The CoMplete Acetabular Hip System is composed of a metal insert (Pinnacle® Ultamet®) designed to seat within a compatible acetabular shell/cup and a compatible femoral bearing head as part of a primary total hip joint replacement. The Pinnacle® insert mechanically locks with the Pinnacle® acetabular shell via a taper junction. The Pinnacle® Ultamet® insert articulates with the compatible femoral head.
The CoMplete Acetabular Hip System's metal insert is manufactured from a cobalt-chromium-molybdenum (CoCrMo) alloy and possesses highly polished surfaces. The metal insert is available with 28mm and 36mm inner diameters and is identical to those described for the DePuy Pinnacle® Ultamet® Acetabular Cup System and cleared under K002883, K003523, K023786, and K062426.

The Pinnacle® Ultamet® metal insert (photo above) can also be used with an M-Spec metal head for metal-on-metal use.
