We just put in a swimming pool - what can I do to prevent accidental injury and drowning?
If you have recently had a pool built on your property, there are several steps you can take to safeguard you, your family, and your guests from serious personal injury or drowning. Perhaps the most important step you can take is installing several different forms of safety equipment. Putting a gate or protective cover around the pool is essential. When purchasing and installing such devices, be sure to check the latches and the amount of pressure each can withstand; for example, make sure that if a child were to fall onto the protective pool cover, it would not buckle beneath them. Also, gates and fences should be at least 4 feet high to prevent children from climbing over them.
Specialized alarm systems are also an excellent way to add to the safety of your pool area. There are many different types of pool alarms, some which are placed on a gate or doorway leading out to the swimming pool, and some that sense motion inside the pool itself. We recommend you research the various methods of alarming your pool, and install one as soon as possible to minimize the risk of personal injury or wrongful death.
Finally, post signs that tell how deep the pool is in certain areas, and/or warning swimmers about the risks of diving, running near the pool, and other potential hazards.
